The partition-levelling operator can be used to generate sub-surfaces. Each sub-surface consists of a set of regions extracted from the original surface. These regions do not have to be contiguous.

Sub-surfaces are sometimes called "regions of interest" and make it possible to analyze (flatness, roughness, etc.) on a portion of the surface.
